SPILL IT
SPILL IT is a PhD research project being undertaken at the School of Population Health at the University of Auckland with software developed by the Starsoft team.
SPILL IT is a mobile phone based brief intervention designed to help young people (18-34 years) keep safe while they are out drinking with their friends.
The SPILL IT solution comprises a web site where young drinkers can sign up and set up messages to be sent to their mobile phones at times which will coincide with their drinking. In addition, an app for smart phones will allow young drinkers to add or change a message text and/or schedule from their phone.
SPILL IT is written in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and includes Telerik and jQuery components.
The user details, messages, and message logs are stored in a Microsoft SQL database 2008 Enterprise R2 to implement the automatic data encryption that guarantees data security.
The Windows Phone 7 app is written in Microsoft Visual Studio Windows Phone Developer tools and accesses the SPILL IT database via web services. The iPhone app is written in MonoTouch and Xcode 3.2.6.
An application behind the web site polls the message database every 5 minutes for messages that are due to be sent to a young drinker and pushes them out to the SMS Global network via their proprietary software.
